Origin of the Name
The hotel is named after the geological trait of Nanjing: the purple mountain. Its peaks are often found enveloped in mysterious purple clouds at dawn and dusk, hence comes its name ¡°Purple Mountain.¡± Purple Mountain is a mountain related to many historical events of both ancient and modern China, and has witnessed the Chinese regime passed down the dynasties from throne to throne at its foot. Located in or close to the hillside of Purple Mountain, there are about a dozen national research institutes, among which Purple Mountain Observatory is the first and largest observatory of China. The armillary, an exquisite astronomic observation tool, now placed on the top of the mountain, is also the centerpiece of the Purple Mountain Hotel lobby: with its 4:3 mockup rotating day and night there tirelessly.
